Sonnetta is an only child raised with the church being the back bone of her family. From childhood, she was constantly exposed to entertainment, culture, music and the arts. Sonnetta’s mom, Ethel became a renown educator, choir director, singer and fashionista before Sonnetta was born. Becoming actively involved in church and school activities at a very early age came naturally to Sonnetta. She sang, acted and played percussion instruments in several groups. She began recording as a child. At the tender age of 11, she became the full-time drummer of her church. In addition to her being the church drummer, she became a professional drummer playing for and recording on records, for groups, choirs, churches, bands, etc. As a young girl, Sonnetta was a drummer for Tammy Faye Bakker, and her orchestra, being featured on her international television show. She was the drummer for her college jazz band. Drumming was also her talent when she secured the crowns in her undefeated pageant wins. At an early age, Sonnetta was also garnering leading roles in her school’s and community’s musical and dramatic shows. Sonnetta‘s mother decided that it was time to get her involved in another aspect of the industry-modeling. After getting representation, Sonnetta begin doing fashion shows, print, television and commercials. She was even chosen as a regional finalist by Seventeen Magazine in their Cover Model Contest. She did all of this while maintaining a 4.3 GPA in school.

Sonnetta then graduated as Valedictorian of her high school class at the age of 16 and became an early admittance college student. Sonnetta also received a full academic scholarship to attend the University of her choice. Since this chain of events had occurred so quickly, she chose to stay close to home and attend Augusta University. She graduated from the university at the age of 20 with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a concentration in Management. At 17, Sonnetta also became the youngest member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
In her first week of college, Sonnetta and her mom were shopping at the mall when she was recruited by a pageant official to enter the Miss Black Augusta pageant. Sonnetta and her mom told the official that they would think about it. After all, it would be a good opportunity to gain exposure while being actively involved in the community. Sonnetta entered and won the title of Miss Black Augusta USA. She then went on to win the title Miss Black Georgia USA. Sonnetta carried out both of her reigns while being a full-time college student.
After college, Sonnetta taught high school. Some of her students were a couple of years younger than her. During this time, she was still acting, modeling and playing drums in church and in bands.
